The Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh is an Autonomous body established and Constituted in the Year 1961 under the provisions of Advocates Act 1961 passed by parliament Which provide for establishment of State Bar Council in each State under Section 3 thereof with a maximum number of 25 elected members. The Advocate General of the both State Punjab & Haryana are Ex-officio members of the Bar Council.
The election to the Punjab & Haryana Bar Council is conducted in accordance with system of proportional representative by means of single transferable vote from amongst Advocates on the Electoral of the State Bar Council. The counting involves elimination by preferential voting basis and the 25 members securing highest votes in order to get elected to the office for a period of 5 years. Amongst elected members, the Chairman and Vice Chairman, Members of various committee are elected through election process and also one representative amongst elected members, is elected to the Bar Council of India, as member.
The Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh is the Apex Body of Lawyers in the State that regulates the entry into, Legal Profession. The important function of Bar Council is to admit persons on its Roll as Advocates so as to grant them permission to practice law. As regards disciplinary Jurisdiction, the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana entertains and determines cases of professional misconduct and other misconduct against Advocates on its roll on a complaint or Suo Moto and also to safe guard the rights, privileges and interest of the Advocates. The Bar Council of India, on the other hand, comprises of members elected and nominated from each of the State Bar Council. [email protected]. The Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana, Chandigarh has also the trustee committee Established under the provision of Punjab & Haryana Advocates Welfare Fund Rules, 1998. For giving financial assistance and medical assistance to the Advocates on its roll. Benevolent fund scheme 2004 has also been framed by the bar council for advocates for providing financial assistance under insurance scheme.
The Punjab advocates welfare fund Act-2002 and the “Advocates Welfare Fund Act 2001” have been put into effect and trustee committees of both State under the respective Act have been constituted by the respective State Governments.
The office of Punjab & Haryana Bar Council is situated in Sector 37-A, Law Bhawan Dakshin Marg Chandigarh.
